Bateaux Below, the underwater archaeology and historic preservation group, was the recipient of a “Preserve America Steward” designation announced on July 29, 2009 from First Lady Michelle Obama and the White House. It was noted that the group and its volunteers were one of only two to receive this distinction as well as the only group from New York state to be recognized by this federal award and for the exemplary volunteer efforts in caring for historic resources in Lake George. The research team has spent the last 22 years studying the lake’s shipwrecks and implementing programs that promote historic preservation of these finite cultural resources. Among its notable achievements was getting several historic shipwrecks listed on the National Register of Historic Places as well as opening the first shipwreck preserve in the Empire State.
