    2013 Celebrates the Bicentennial

Artist Sher Millis has moved forward in her goal to create a community mural in each of the whistle stops on the Saratoga and North Creek railroad line in the First Wilderness Corridor. This year’s project is on the south 92’ x 7’ wall of Luzerne Market at 12 Main St. in Lake Luzerne. The planning began late last summer as she was finishing up the Corinth Depot Mural on 9N in Corinth. Sher had been eyeing the site for over a year. She communicated with the owner, Mr. Steve Mackey, who responded very favorably. Steve then requested that the subject of the mural be the real Lake Luzerne. The project was born. It is a mural of a panoramic sweep of the entire “Lake Luzerne” including “Ivy Island.” The name of the project is the “The Lake Luzerne Mural 2013.” Ms. Millis then, at the urging of Grant Coordinator Candice Frye of LARAC, prepared an individual artist grant application. The review panel awarded Sher a $2,500 grant in December 2012. From there communication ensued with the Director of the Stuart M. Townsend Middle School’s Extended Learning Program, Mr. Jim Kneeshaw and a class was organized for 6th to 8th grade students. Then everyone had to wait for the snow to melt to get started. Finally the mural project started May 14th, 2013. The public is invited to participate, when the class is completed June 14th, or just stop by and witness its progress. Estimated time to complete the project will be by the end of August. Total costs for the project is $5,500. This project is made possible, in part, with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization Program with supplemental funding from Rivendell Foundation, administered locally by the Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council. The project is seeking additional sponsors and/or donors for the balance of the funds.
