Both the avid biker and the leisurely bicyclist can enjoy the 22-mile loop through some of the most picturesque countryside in Warren County. Although the complete circuit can be covered in a little over two hours, it can also become an overnight journey by stopping along the way at a campsite or bed & breakfast.
The loop begins at the Warrensburg Health Center parking lot at the corner of Route 9 (Main St.) and Richards Avenue in Warrensburg. Head to the left (northwest) up Route 9 to the intersection of Main, Hudson, and Elm Streets, where you’ll find a Floyd Bennett Bandstand. Continue through the intersection, bearing slightly left and up Hudson Street, past some of Warrensburg’s stately Victorian homes. About 2 1/2 miles up is the Warren County Nature Trail on the left. Beyond the nature trail and a wooded area you’ll glimpse the first panoramic view of the Hudson River. Continue on, and at approximately 5 miles in the ride turn left (north) onto Route 28.
A spectacular view of the river can be seen all along this stretch. Cross over the Glen Bridge which connects the town of Warrensburg and Thurman. Established in 1792, Thurman was the parent town of 9 others, originally encompassing 800 miles. At the end of the bridge turn left (west) onto the Glen-Athol Road.
Continue along the Glen-Athol Road over rolling hills, and at approximately 13 1/2 miles into the trip travel straight through the stop sign. About a mile along, a pond will be on your right. Just after the pond turn left (southwest) onto High Street. Ride past the Christ Community Church, the Thurman Volunteer Fire Road, where you’ll make a left turn. Then turn right and cross over the Thurman Station Bridge, which is the beginning of River Street (Route 418). Continue past Hickory Hill Road and continue into the hamlet of Warrensburg, stopping at the intersection of River Street and Richards Avenue. Turn left and over the Osborne Bridge, then right onto Water Street where you’ll see the “Duck Crossing”, and continue to the starting point at the Warrensburg Health Center.
