"Adirondack Rustic:  Nature's Art 1876-1950 Online Exhibit" - features art, architecture, and furniture from throughout the region. View some of the best examples of "Adirondack Rusticity" (including an Adirondack Log Cabin, Avalanche Camp lean-to, and the Saranac beer cart), "Great Rustic Camps" (such as Camp Pine Knot, Camp Uncas, Camp Kill Kare, and Camp Topridge) and "Adirondack Rustic Furniture" (including a corner cupboard, secretary desk, tall clock case, and mosaic twig table).  Online photographs and documents enhance the story and illustrate "rustic" as an aesthetic, an architectural style, and a way of life/ Adirondack Museum, Blue Mountain Lake.  352-7311.  adkmuseum.org

"Bolton Historical Museum" - photographs and exhibits feature hotels, old tools, boats, ice harvesting equipment, local businesses, steamboats, camping, ice boats, vintage clothing, lakeside mansions, farm implements, schools and families.  Many historic photographs were taken by Seneca Ray Stoddard and Fred Thatcher.  A 1900 Smith-Granger rowboat and a steel sculpture by local artist David Smith are also on display/ Bolton Historical Museum, Bolton Landing.  644-2444.  boltonhistorical.org

 

"City Hall Gallery" - exhibits change on a monthly basis and is available to local artists year round/ North Country Arts Center (NCAC) at the City Hall Gallery, Ridge St., Glens Falls.  northcountryartscenter.org

 

"Heavy Lifting:  A Human and Technological History of Moving Slate from Quarry to Market, 1850 - Present" - exhibit displayed within a restored historic 19th Century New World Dutch Barn/ Slate Valley Museum, Granville.  642-1417.  slatevalleymuseum.org

 

"The Lake George Historical Association Museum" - view Native American artifacts, The Lake George Monster, stories in pictures of historic boats found in Lake George, 1756 powder horn, Diorama, map, flags & books of the 1777 Battle at Saratoga, early 20th Century American Ephemera, old photographs of Lake George lives in history, 15th Century dugout canoe, antique tools, 1930's hand crafted Lake George rowboat, and more.  SPECIAL 2010 EXHIBITS:  A room dedicated to HER STORY - celebrating the lives of several women in history from the Lake George area - includes memorabilia and photos from the ERVIEN family, the LEFFINGWELL mansion, the MOON family, and a dollhouse built by their Grandfather in the early 1900's for sisters Mildred and Marion Eldridge.  A new exhibit with information about THE GRACE - a Naptha engine powered boat from the 1890's owned by Robert Ervien.  A CELEBRATION of the 60th Anniversary of American Heritage Magazine because the Lake George Historical Association is a MUSEUM MEMBER!!!/ Lake George Historical Association Museum and Bookstore, Lake George.  668-5044.  lakegeorgehistorical.org

 

"Long-Term Exhibits at the Adirondack Museum" - celebrating 50 years dedicated to regional history and the Adirondack wilderness.  In these exhibits, explore outdoor recreation, transportation, the fine arts, work and industry, tourism, community life and more/ The Adirondack Museum, Blue Mountain Lake.  352-7311.  adirondackmuseum.org

These exhibits include:

1.  "Living with Wilderness" - introducing the geology, geography, and settlement of the Adirondacks.

2.  "Roads and Rails:  Everyday Life in the Age of Horses" - introducing early transportation and community life.  Exhibit includes:  Private railroad car, mammoth snow roller, Concord stagecoach, the carriage that rushed Vice-President Theodore Roosevelt to a train in North Creek the night President McKinley died, sleighs, buggies, a horse-drawn hearse and many other vehicles, farming gallery, peddler's wagon, and a complete blacksmith shop.

3.  "Boats & Boating in the Adirondacks" - illustrating the importance of boats for transportation and for leisure.  View over 50 boats including guide boats & wooden canoes.

4.  "Works in the Woods:  Logging in the Adirondacks" - exploring the history and traditions of the timber industry.  Discover the tools used and species harvested in the Adirondacks and products made of wood.  See what life was like in a logging camp and how the industry has changed.

5.  "Bull Cottage:  Adirondack Rustic Furniture" - displaying important examples of Adirondack rustic furniture.

6.  "The Buck Lake Club:  An Adirondack Hunting Camp" - a unique 20th Century one-room log cabin used as a hunting camp.

7.   "The Log Hotel:  Hotels, Camps and Adirondack Clubs" - the 1876 Log Hotel's lobby and a guest room will help visitors imagine the early days of tourism in the Adirondacks;  enjoy artifacts that relate to travel, lodging, private camps and clubs.

8.  "Woods and Water:  Outdoor Recreation in the Adirondacks" - displays of hunting, fishing, camping and hiking equipment; explore outdoor recreation in the late 1800's and early 1900's.

9.  "The Great Outdoors" - an exhibition just for children and families featuring hands-on discovery stations all about outdoor sports.  Cook a meal over the campfire, take a nap in the tent, use snowshoes in the summer time or try rock climbing.

10.  "Outdoor Exhibits, Historic Buildings, and Scenic Spots"

 

"Old Fort House Museum" - campus of historic buildings make up multiple exhibits for visitors to enjoy including:  The Old Fort House Museum, 1840 Tollhouse, Riverside School House, 1853 A. Through October 18       "A Wild, Unsettled Country:  Early Reflections of the Adirondacks" - paintings, maps, prints and photographs illustrate the untamed Adirondack wilderness discovered by early artists, cartographers, and photographers.  This exhibit showcases more than 40 paintings from the museum's collection (including works by Thomas Cole, John Frederick Kensett, William Havell and James David Smillie), features 50 of the engravings and lithographs of Adirondack landscape paintings that brought these images to a wider audience and provides many Americans their first look at the Adirondack Mountains, reveals photographs sold as tourist souvenirs and special labels and text just for kids/ Adirondack Museum, Blue Mountain Lake.  352-7311.  adkmuseum.org

 

Through October 18       "Common Threads:  150 Years of Adirondack Quilts and Comforters" - includes historical quilts from the museum's textile collection, contemporary quilts, comforters and pieced wall hangings on loan from regional quilters.  This exhibit will also explore themes of women's work, domestic life, social networks in a rural area, generational continuity among women, and women's artistic response to life in the Adirondacks.  It will connect the past with the present through familiar household objects.  Visitors can recreate a pattern from the exhibit, design their own quilt block using tangrams (geometric wooden blocks) or create landscape scenes on a felt wall/ Adirondack Museum, Blue Mountain Lake.  352-7311.  adkmuseum.org

 

Through October 18       "Let's Eat!  Adirondack Food Traditions" - examines the universal experience of preparing, presenting, and eating a meal while focusing on Adirondack culinary stories and traditions, as well as conveying the story of food in the Adirondacks to the present day.  Learn about objects the Adirondacks have used to cook and eat, and how hand-written menus and journals provided an intimate look at food in family life;  view posters advertising turkey shoots, dances, and potluck supper identifying the ways food has served as the centerpiece of social life in small isolated hamlets;  examine historic photographs spanning more than 150 years showing people dining inside, in crowded mess halls, on picnic blankets, and seated at elegant tables/ Adirondack Museum, Blue Mountain Lake.  352-7311.  adkmuseum.org

 

Through October 23       "Austere Luxury: Two Artists Find Slate and Bring It Home" - Married Russian artists Felix Kniazev and Olga Julinska display an interior space where local slate, hardwood, powder coated steel, and handmade ceramics are all performing a symphony together.  The line between art and functionality in this collection of furniture and decorative pieces is blurred, inspiring viewers to see exceptional beauty in common native materials/ Slate Valley Museum, Granville.  642-1417.  slatevalleymuseum.org 

 

Through December 30    "To Life!  A Celebration of Vermont Jewish Women and Because God Loves Stories/ Jewish Storytelling" - depicts the life stories of 20 Jewish women living in Vermont, from all walks of life, ages 12 to 101.  Every woman's story is illustrated with her portrait, archival photos, essays, and selected stories in her own words/ Slate Valley Museum, Granville.  642-1417.  slatevalleymuseum.org
