Garnet Mine Tours was established in 1878, making it the “Longest running family-owned industry,” and tours have been offered since 1933.  They provide fun for all ages! Learn about The Mining History and Geology Rock & Garnet Collection; Prospect and Discover you own gemstones in the Historic Mine;  explore the historic Garnet Mineral and the Old Fashion Mineral Shop (fabulous jewelry, fireplace and landscape rock, fun science and nature toys, prospectors sluice).  Group tours are welcomed.

Did You Know?

  • Garnet, January’s Birthstone, is New York State’s official gemstone.
  • Garnet Mines quarried the 20-ton  (119 x 67 x 47 inch) block of garnet that is part of the foundation of the Freedom Tower at the site of Ground Zero in New York City.
  • One of the world’s largest concentration and formation of garnet was discovered in the 1870′s in North River.

Open: daily June 25 thru Labor Day (Monday – Saturday 9:30PM-5PM, and Sunday 11AM-5PM).  Open: Weekends after Labor Day thru October 7 (Saturday 9:30AM-5PM, and Sunday 11AM-5PM).

Garnet Mine Tours is located just 35 minute from Lake George.  Take Northway Exit 23 to Route 9. Travel north on Route 9 through Warrensburg.  Left on Route 28 for approximately 21 miles to North River and left on paved Barton Mines Road for 5 miles to Gore Mountain Mineral Shop.
