• 2012 Adirondack Balloon Festival, Moonglows & Fireworks

    One of the quintessential Fall activities in the Glens Falls – Queensbury – Lake George NY Region is the very popular & exciting Adirondack Balloon Festival held in September, which features a kickoff celebration party, numerous hot air balloons, moonglows, and fireworks. 2012 marks its 40th Anniversary celebration, which takes place Thursday to Sunday, September 20-23, 2012. This four day annual Hot Air Balloon Festival is the largest & oldest balloon event in the North East. Enjoy the variety of beautiful & unique hot air balloons (up to 100+ balloons at times and many including special shape balloons) floating through the skies of the Adirondack Region, which launch from Floyd Bennett Memorial Airport in Queensbury. Other fun & popular activities include the Downtown Glens Falls Balloon Fest Kickoff Celebration & Block Party with fireworks, the annual Lake George Moonglow with fireworks, and the newly added Moonglow at the airport.

    Thurs., Sept. 20 – Glens Falls Balloon Fest Kickoff Celebration & Block Party:

    (City of Glens Falls)

    • 4:30-6:30PM:  Kickoff Celebration and Opening Ceremonies (acknowledging it’s 40th Anniversary) with live music, and launch of 20+ balloons including special “Birthday Cake” balloon at Crandall Park in Downtown Glens Falls.

    • 6-9:30PM:  Block Party featuring hot air balloons, music, entertainment, kids’ activities, and fireworks on Glen Street in Downtown Glens Falls.

     

    Fri., Sept. 21 thru  Sun., Sept. 23 –  Hot Air Balloon Launches & Activities:

    (Floyd Bennett Memorial Airport, Town of Queensbury)

    • The public is invited (for free) to view a multitude of beautifully colored hot air balloons which launch in the evenings & early morning at the airport. Many of these balloons include special shapes (featuring spyder pig balloon, “Lily” the bee balloon, barn balloon, “Fred” the rabbit balloon, pig headed balloon, T Rex balloon, birthday cake balloon, and more). See launch schedule below:

    • Friday at 5PM – launch of 80+ balloons including special shapes
    • Saturday at 6:30AM & 5PM – launch of 100 balloons including special shapes during each flight time
    • Sunday at 6:30AM – simultaneous flight of 100 balloons including shapes for “Walter’s Mass Ascension”

    • Throughout the day, while the balloons are floating throughout the region, there are a variety of activities happening at the airport including:  craft fair, kids’ activities (bounce houses, rock climbing wall), aircraft display, food vendors, “Big Balloon Breakfast,” and entertainment (Jonathan Newell Band performance on Sat. 2-5PM). Gate to the airport opens at 3PM on Fri., 5AM on Sat., and 5AM on Sun.

     

    Fri., Sept. 21 – Moonglow at the Lake & Fireworks

    (Battlefield Park on Beach Road, Lake George Village)

    • 8PM:  A breathtaking sight of tethered hot air balloons glowing in the dark, followed by fireworks over Lake George. Bring your flashlights! This annual event is usually on Saturday night – moved to Friday instead because of new Moonglow at airport on Saturday (see below).

     

    Sat., Sept. 22 – 40 for 40 Moonglow

    (Floyd Bennett Memorial Airport, Town of Queensbury)

    • 8PM:  To celebrate the festival’s 40th Anniversary, enjoy the sight of 40 tethered hot air balloons illuminating the airport. Bring your flashlights!

     

    Sun., Sept. 23 – Final Balloon Launch

    (Crandall Park, City of Glens Falls)

    • Final balloon launch at Crandall Park – enjoy DJ with music (2-5PM), and balloon launch of 20+ balloons (5PM).
